The Commissioner's New Year's Levee is held each year on January 1 in Whitehorse. The event includes award presentations and musical performances followed by a catered reception.
On Wednesday, January 1, 2020, the said event was held at Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre.
The Honourable Angélique Bernard, Commissioner of Yukon presented the Commissioner Award for Public Volunteer Service to our very own, Leona Corniere, through her work with the development and implementation of Handle with Care (HWC), promoting the mental health of young children
This award honours outstanding individuals who have made a significant volunteer contribution to Yukon business, academics, arts, culture or society. These individuals are recognized for work outside of their regular employment. This award can only be received once.
Commissioner’s Public Volunteer Service Award Leona Corniere: Leona has helped numerous families and caregivers throughout the Yukon build skills so that children and their families have brighter futures. She has done this by the development and implementation of Handle with Care (HWC), promoting the mental health of young children. Leona has been a volunteer for 15 years. Leona helped develop this program and was involved in all phases of it from the research phase to the program and delivery phase. She supports this program through her work at the Child Development Centre. Most of her time is spent volunteering. Leona has also volunteered for other organizations such as Victim Services, Yukon Disabilities Association Board Member, Yukon River Quest and as an Auxiliary RCMP Officer.
